Haikus

Indigo sky,
speckled with stars--
sunset aftermath

billowing clouds
curve along
the secluded cove

Ivory flowers
blanket red soil,
mango trees in bloom

Smelling rain
on oil-laden pavement,
I long for country

surfers crouch
in liquid tubes,
returning to the womb

Barely submerged
Black, razor-sharp spines pierce skin:
Low tide.

Blowing out birthday candles,
she wishes again
for love

breathing shallow,
new lovers play
with nervous touches

abandoned,
azure-striped beach umbrellas
masked by snow.

Rain drops
intermittently,
rainbows brighten skies

Long silver traces
of shooting stars
leave her breathless

Jagged bolts of lighting,
Dazzling orange embers—
Earth’s fireworks

Tiny bursts of yellow light
illuminate dark woods:
Fireflies.

flames flicker,
ghosts on the wall
dance

Dew flecks
giant lily pads--
Amazon dawn.

Intoxicated love
and confetti strewn dancehalls:
Wedding season

Mosquitos
ruthlessly suck
tender folds of skin

She dislikes cologne
but finds his effort
endearing

Bustling streets
grow quiet:
siesta.

Full moon,
surfers glide
on silver water

Mid day
hot sand
burns feet

gusts of wind
sway tall bamboo forests:
wood chimes

treading
on virgin sand,
crabs scatter

North swell--
surfers churn
in whitewash

Swooping and circling,
Brightly-colored butterflies,
Flirt.

Bubbling below sea,
unsullied land
compiles and compounds
